Jacob Key
R&D Engineer
Engineering Intern
Organization:
Total Joint Orthopedics
Hip and Knee Implant Company
Project Description:
My primary roles during the summer internship were to design a surgical tool for total knee arthroplasty, create mechanical drawings for manufacturing, and produce design control documentation for a new line of knee implants including FMEAs. I was able to contribute to many stages of the medical device design process, and design/prototype a new tool for the revision knee system.

What I Learned:
I believe the most important skill I learned during this internship was design intent and designing for a company. While I had CAD experience prior, I never considered the importance of designing my CAD models and feature tree in such a way that other employees could easily pick up the project and understand the decisions I made. I also learned about GD&T when creating mechanical drawings for production which I had never been exposed to before.
